Also known as composite resins, tooth coloured fillings are sculpted onto your teeth for a flawless look.
A mixture of acrylic resin, fine glass and silicon particles white fillings are sculpted and polished to match your surrounding natural teeth for a beautiful, complete smile. The strength and natural appearance of tooth coloured restorations makes them a popular option, which can be completed in a single visit.
Unlike amalgam (metal) fillings, white fillings are better for your teeth.
Amalgam fillings can expand and contract with extreme temperatures, which can result in a cracked tooth. There is also the chance with amalgam fillings for decay to form underneath the amalgam filling which may mean you will need root canal treatment. With white fillings, the tooth is completely sealed so decay cannot form under the filling.
Inlays and Onlays
An inlay fits within the grooves of the tooth’s biting surface while onlay can cover one or more cusps of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are a natural looking alternative to fillings. Made from porcelain for strength, they are custom made to fit and fill most types of cavities and are almost impossible to distinguish from your natural teeth.
Usually taking two appointments to complete, inlays and onlays look exactly like the rest of your tooth and are so durable that they need not be replaced for many years.
At your first appoint any decay is removed and your tooth is shaped, then an impression of your tooth is taken and sent to the lab where the restoration is made. In the meantime, a temporary inlay or only is placed until your final restoration is ready.
At the next appointment, the temporary inlay or onlay is removed and the permanent one is placed. Once you and your dentist are happy with the fit the inlay or onlay will be bonded into place.
Amalgam Filling Alternative in Aspley and Bulimba
Inlays and onlays use a precise replica of your tooth, made from a moulded impression. Unlike conventional fillings, which require the removal of large amounts of healthy tooth, only the damaged portion of the tooth needs to be removed. Once placed, they are virtually undetectable in the mouth and they preserve much more of your natural tooth structure than standard amalgam fillings.
