Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth that are typically made from an acrylic resin: sometimes incorporating porcelain or metal for additional support.
At Smile Perfection Dental in Brisbane we provide our patients with a range of options when it comes to dentures. There are three main types of dentures, all of which are finely crafted and custom-fitted:
Complete, or full arch, denture
If you’ve lost or are losing all of your teeth, a complete, or full arch, denture may be the solution for you.
Two types of complete denture are available: conventional dentures and immediate dentures. Both types are created after your teeth have been removed (if necessary) and your gum tissue has begun to heal. Conventional dentures are generally ready for placement 12 weeks after your teeth have been removed.
Immediate dentures are made in advance, so when your remaining teeth are removed, the dentures can be positioned straightaway. The benefit of this type of denture is that you will not need to go without teeth while your gum tissue heals.
Partial denture
If some of your teeth remain and are healthy, a partial denture may be your path to a great smile.
Partial dentures are used when you have some teeth remaining. A removable partial denture is made up on replacement teeth attached to a gum-coloured plastic base. This base is held in place by a metal framework that holds the denture in your mouth.
Overdentures
An overdenture uses precision attachments in the tooth root to hold the denture in place.
This is done by preparing your remaining teeth by removing the portion of the tooth above the gum line (the crown of the tooth). Then root canal therapy is carried out on the prepared teeth to prevent infection. Once this has been completed, an impression on your teeth is taken and sent to the lab to for your overdenture to be created.
Looking after your dentures
If you properly maintain your dentures, they will appear natural and provide a perfect smile. Additionally, dentures help strengthen muscles controlling your expressions that require the support of your teeth, rid you of pronunciation problems caused by missing teeth and aid with chewing.
